Patriotism in education
Drawing on my background in sociology and social development, I analysed national education strategies across Asia-Pacific to examine how education systems defined the “ideal citizen.” The work involved reviewing education plans and related policy documents to identify recurring expectations around behaviour, values, knowledge, skills, community, nationhood, global orientation, rights, equality, and culture. The analysis showed that many systems placed stronger emphasis on behavioural and social conformity than on explicit political participation, while also revealing emerging tensions around diversity, global citizenship, and individualisation. This report later led directly to a follow-up assignment on youth citizenship and identity in the region.
